As of December, Calvin and I are the proud new owners of 40 acres in Brimson. Since our move from our tiny cabin out in the woods, we've tackled a couple of tasks that we inherited with the property. First, we "remodeled" the two bedrooms. One was an atrocious canary yellow color, the other fell to the fate of a boring beige. Since then we've revamped both by using more friendly colors.
Next was the "addition". Appropriately named because our house has been built in three stages. The first, which is the original portion of the house, was built and transplanted onto our property quite a few years back. The locals tell us it was either and old school house or an old saloon. Once I've got the history behind it pinned down I will post about it. As far as I know it was built in the 1930's. It's an interesting little piece of history that I hope to dig into and unveil.
Secondly we have the kitchen which was added in probably the 70's, but has since been remodeled with some lovely modern cabinets and paneling. It's a nice little space and I've taken a liking to cooking, so I spend a lot of time there.
Then there's the addition. I believe it was built in the 90's and has since fallen victim to a wall fire due to a rusty, worn out thimble that was attached to the fireplace. Thankfully the previous owners caught the fire early, and the local volunteer fire department was able to save the structure. Since moving in we've replaced the far wall and everything that was smoke damaged. It's coming along well. There's new sheet rock and within the next few weeks, after completing the less than pleasant task of sanding the mud, we will paint and put up the trim. We picked up a nice little wood stove than a man was selling on craigslist, and we'll have a cozy little stone-
tiled corner where the fireplace used to be. I hope to add a couple of the rocks from the Great Wall of China, that I picked up on a trip several years ago, to the stone work.
Most recently, we've been working on the greenhouses. Along with our purchase, we've inherited forty acres and some shabby greenhouses that need some work. They'll be good for our first growing season, and so begins my career as a farmer. With the snowstorms late in the season a couple of them collapsed. Thanks to some hard work and a crew of fantastic friends we were able to fix one of them this past week.
Next post I will include some before and after pictures of the bedrooms, and hopefully some of the greenhouses. I will see what I can do in terms of the history of the house.
